Preface to Perspectives for a New Enlightenment: Essays in Humanist Understanding

These discussion papers grew out of conversations among the members of the New
Enlightenment Project. The original intention was to have them appear on a page of the group’s
website to help clarify the NEP’s position on several topics of importance. It was also hoped that
they would encourage further thought and an exchange of opinions.

Encounters that I had with non-NEP individuals suggested to me that, while they were interested
in current issues, my contacts were often not familiar with some basic ideas. The impact of
superficial or even deliberately misleading information, especially on social media, was evident.
The topics that I chose were ones that I personally deemed important and to which I had given
considerable thought. For example, matters relating to sexuality, indigenous history, and
religious fundamentalism have received much coverage in the mainstream media, which have
become perhaps unduly influenced by Wokism.

Threats to our fundamental liberty of Freedom of Expression must be countered with both
rationality and passion. Furthermore, no discussion of any serious matter should ignore the
fundamentals of economics. And, finally, the artistic achievements of humanity always merit the
appreciation of humanists.

The format of most of the discussion papers consists of two short expositions that outline some
of the key facts and their interpretation from a humanist perspective. They are followed by an
annotated bibliography. The list of books includes an attempt to present various points of view,
even those with which I strongly disagree.

I had the pleasure of working as a teacher for many years at the Royal Ontario Museum in
Toronto. One of my principal tasks was to try to communicate the ideas of the expert and
specialized curators to the general public. That audience ranged from adolescents to the aged.
The lessons had to be presented in such a way that the visitors could take away something
important and memorable without being overwhelmed by complication and detail. I hope that I
have achieved this goal again through these discussion papers.

The brief essays contained in this volume are an attempt to introduce a variety of topics from a
humanist perspective. The intent is that they will stimulate discussion and a desire to learn more.
Humanists value seeking understanding from analyzing evidence rationally with compassion.
